Hidden Valley High School
Class of 2017

University: Chemeketa Community College in Salem
Major: Horticulture.
Scholarships received through JCEF: In addition to the JC Master Gardeners, I want to thank JC Young Farmers, The Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Oregon Nursery Association and OHSET: Southern District for their scholarships.

Why Chemeketa: It offers the best program in my major and is near the horticulture and nursery business center of Oregon. I plan to obtain an AS Degree in Horticulture in pursuit of gaining more knowledge that will take my passion of working outdoors and with plants to a whole new level.

Experiences influencing my major or career choice: As a member of FFA at HVHS, I had a chance to learn about agribusiness, floriculture and horticulture. I’ve always had a passion for working outside and want to give back to the Earth and my community.

Why this career is a good fit: I desire to enjoy my career and my life.By pursuing a career in horticulture, I believe I’ll be able to find tranquility through being my own boss and being able to work while being surrounded by beautiful trees and plants.

Volunteer or paid work that set me on this career path: I volunteered at several local nurseries and was offered a job at Murphy Country Nursery. I interviewed the owners and got their perspective on owning and managing this type of business.

High School activities, clubs or sports: FFA interim vice president in 2015-2016; president 2016-2017;on Equestrian Team 2014-2017.

What I learned through participation: As a member of the Equestrian Team for 4 years, I learned that communication, teamwork and determination are key to working well with others.

Planned college activities, clubs and sports: I hope to meet new people with similar interests by joining a local horticulture or gardening club. I also want to meet fellow equestrian and horseback riders.
